West Dunbartonshire team winners –  Final Score 4½ – 3½

WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE LEISURE

POST EVENT PRESS RELEASE – CHARLIE GREEN TROPHY 2014

With Ryder Cup fever gripping the nation this September, West Dunbartonshire Leisure have been raising awareness and getting young people involved in the sport of golf, with the aim of creating a lasting golfing legacy in the local authority.

A team of 12 secondary school pupils represented West Dunbartonshire in the Charlie Green Trophy at Kirkintilloch Golf Club on Sunday 21st September 2014 – a Ryder Cup style match between East v West Dunbartonshire.

This event was held for the first time last year and honours one of Scotland’s finest amateur golfers of all time – possibly the finest. Charlie Green won the Silver Medal as leading amateur at The Open Championship at Royal Troon in 1962 and represented Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup on 5 occasions between 1963 and 1975, captaining the team in 1983 and 1985.

The Charlie Green Trophy has now become a permanent fixture in the junior golf calendar, forming a lasting legacy from this year’s Ryder Cup held in Gleneagles, Scotland and a fitting tribute to a Scottish golfing legend.

The players with the 12 best gross scores from the recent WD High Schools Golf Championship were selected to represent the West Dunbartonshire team this year.

The team was captained by Christopher O’Neill from St. Peter the Apostle High School and the other team members were as follows: – David Hood, James Slevin, John Cullen, Dominic Donaldson and Scott Cameron from Vale of Leven Academy, Kieran Quinn, Ashton McLean, Callum McAteer and Conor Doherty from St. Peter the Apostle High School, Lorna McClymont from Dumbarton Academy and Amy Docherty from Our Lady and St. Patrick’s High School.

East Dunbartonshire proved victorious last year, winning the Charlie Green Trophy 5½ – 2½, so West Dunbartonshire were looking for a win this time around.

The weather was perfect for golf, with the sun shining all day and Kirkintilloch Golf Club proved a great setting for the event. Both teams were introduced via an opening ceremony which also provided information about the background of the event and Charlie Green himself.

The players were provided with caps and polo shirts and their caddies were given bibs to wear around the course, East Dunbartonshire in Red and West Dunbartonshire in Blue.

The competition took the form of 4 singles matches and 4 fourball matches, with the team captains teeing off in the first singles match.

All matches were closely fought throughout the day, with the outcome coming down to the final hole of the final match! Conor Doherty from St. Peter the Apostle High School clinched the trophy for the West Dunbartonshire Team, hitting a fantastic bunker shot then sinking his putt to win his fourball game. This final point proved enough for West Dunbartonshire to triumph 4½ – 3½ overall and win the Charlie Green Trophy 2014.

Andrew McKay, Active Schools Manager for West Dunbartonshire Leisure was delighted with how the event ran: –

Our inaugural Charlie Green Trophy last year was fantastic and the 2014 event certainly lived up to expectations and built on this success. I think we really captured some of the Ryder Cup spirit and feel with the players and caddies kitted out in blue and red team colours.

The standard of play was high and the atmosphere was brilliant with players from both teams cheering on their team mates as they completed their matches. The event was made even more exciting with the result coming down to the final hole of the final match.

I feel we have made a great start at creating a long local legacy from both Charlie Green’s exceptional golfing career and the Ryder Cup 2014.”

Active Schools would like to thank Perry Golf for their sponsorship which assisted us in providing the West Dunbartonshire Team with caps and polo shirts for this year’s event.
